Ham Radio Projects

One of my favorite parts of the Ham Radio Hobby is the building of Ham Radio Projects . There are many good books out there on building all different kinds of Ham Radio Projects. One of the earliest books I bought a long time ago was called Master Handbook Of Ham Radio Circuits. I was probably 16 or 17 years old when I bought. I wasn't even thinking about ham radio at that time. I think it was more because I was getting interested in electronics. The book has a lot of different circuits for building amplifiers as well as other circuitry.
Taking a look at Amazon I see quite a few different Books On Ham Radio and projects for Ham Radio. Even my ARRL Ham Radio Manual I bought for Electrical Engineering in college has a lot of projects especially with antennas. So I would definitely recommend buying the newest 2015 version of the ARRL Manual. You can also search on the internet and find plenty of good websites with ham radio projects. That's one of the best parts of the Ham Radio Hobby, that is homebrewing and building your own Ham Radio Projects.
Here is a short list of some websites for Ham Radio Projects.
  1. http://www.foxdelta.com/
  2. http://www.arrl.org/projects-for-the-ham-shack
  3. http://www.dmoz.org/Recreation/Radio/Amateur/Homebrew/
  4. http://www.cqham.ru/projects/hamradio_projects.htm
  5. http://www.hamuniverse.com/antennas.html
In fact that is where I have gotten alot of ideas for the projects I am working on. I find something on the internet and I try changing the design and find out how things are changed. They may be changed for the better or for the worse. Check out Ebay at this link for Ham Radio Kits. If you are going to build antenna projects then I would invest in one of the Antenna Analyzers . This way you can test the antenna without risking damage to your Ham radio. You also will not be interfering with anyone on the Ham Radio Band. Now if you are going to build any kind of electronic project I would invest in a good digital multimeter, oscilloscope and other Electronic Test Equipment . You can all kinds of electronic test equipment through my Amazon Stores below the posts on my blogs.  Thank You for reading from Dan KC2YTI  73s.

It's funny when you tell someone your a Ham they either get a funny look on their face or they just look at you and say what.
  1.  Question #1 is this a Ham?

Add Some Power To Your Ham Shack

At some point in time you will most likely want to add some power to your ham shack. Most base Ham Radios only put out 100 Watts. Most Ham Radio Operators do get by with 100 Watts. My feeling is that we all would like to be able to put out more than 100 Watts. I know for myself I would love to have an amplifier that at least could put out 1500 Watts. I think I could even get by with 500 Watts. You do have a couple ways to go when buying an amplifier. You can buy a new amplifier or you can buy a used amplifier. If you can afford a new Ham Radio Amplifier I say go for it. Now there is nothing wrong with buying a Used Ham Radio Amplifier .

Shortwave Radio For Your Ham Shack

I recommend having at least one shortwave radio in the Ham Shack. I have three different shortwave radios in my Ham Shack. I have an older small radio shack shortwave radio that does a pretty good job. I have had it for quite a few years now. The second shortwave radio is made by sangean and is the ATS 505 and again it works very well and has some good features. My third shortwave radio is the Grundig satelit 750. I bought this one when my Kenwood TS-2000 went down and had to be sent in for repair. I wanted something that would pick up quite a few of the Ham Bands. That radio has excellent receive with it's telescoping antenna and was even better when connected to my dipole antenna. It may have been somewhat expensive, but was worth every penny. If you are looking for a good shortwave radio that is the one I would suggest.

Laptop Computer For Logging And Ham Radio Control

There are many different Laptop Computers that can be used for your Logging Software and for Controlling your Ham Radio. I work on computers all day long and one of the most common problems is due to viruses. My advise would be to use Google or Yahoo and search out the name of any software. In other words type a question or phrase like: This (name of the program) causes viruses, spyware, adware or malware. Chances are you will find forums where someone had a problem with a certain program or website. It is very common for websites to try and install junk programs and useless toolbars that bring in problems. My advise is to keep your antivirus software up to date. Check to make sure it has not expired. I have seen way too many times when the virus program expired months ago and is pretty much useless. I would also use programs such as free malwarebytes and spybot. They can be found at these links https://www.malwarebytes.org/products/ and http://www.safer-networking.org/private/ .

Ham Radio Deluxe Logging Software And More

Ham Radio Deluxe in my opinion is one of the best Logging Ham Radio programs on the internet. It can be used to control your Ham Radio and your Rotor for your Ham Radio Antenna. It also had Digital Modes and Tracks Satellites as well. It is definitely well worth the cost of the program. If you are interested check it out at this web link http://www.ham-radio-deluxe.com/ . If you are interested you can find a freeware 5.24 version from this website link http://www.iw5edi.com/software/ham-radio-deluxe-5-download-links . From there you can download it and install it. This is a freeware version and the 6 version from the first link is a paid commercial version. I would try the freeware version and then decide if you want to try the paid version. Below is a video about various Ham Radio Freeware on the internet.

Get Your Ham Radio License Today

Today in Ham Radio you are going to need a Ham Radio License to be able to transmit on a given frequency. There are 3 licenses that anyone can achieve. There isn't any cost to getting the license. Well I should say the only cost is your time. Now you can go to various websites and keep answering the questions until you have them memorized. The only issue with this is that you really have not learned anything. You have only just memorized the answers to the questions. Now if your goal is to just get the license to be able to use a Ham Radio, then that is your choice and I do not judge you for it. I would suggest that you buy a book on Ham Radio and start reading. I would bet you become very interested and want to learn more.
The Three Main Ham Radio Licenses are:

Add More Components To Your Ham Shack

                                       SHORTWAVE RADIO

Uniden Bearcat BC898T Base or Portable Scanner. I have mainly used the telescoping antenna with it. I have tried connecting my Super MP3 Antenna to it and had better results. Of course being on the lower level of our raised ranch the antenna is not too high to reception is limited. I am working on home-brewing a scanner antenna that I will mount outside up on my telescoping mast. I will have to wait for warmer weather to go any further with it. I plan on testing with 1/4, 1/2 and 5/8 wave design. There are also plenty of scanner antennas you can buy, but I prefer to build one to see what it will do.

Your First Ham Shack

Setting up your first Ham Shack may seem a little scary at first, but it does not have to be. I would start out with the basics when deciding on a Ham Shack for all your Ham Radio Equipment . There are some Ham Radio Operators that may have a separate building or maybe a room out in their garage. I would just make sure it's heated for the cold weather and cool in the hot time of the year. Other considerations for locating your Ham Shack is a fairly quite place in your house. In my house that isn't an easy task. Right now it is next to the family room and at times it can be somewhat noisy. I have moved it to quite a few different locations in the house and now I am right back where I started.

Ham Radio Repair

Sooner or later you are going to need to repair your Ham Radio or maybe one of the pieces of Ham Radio Equipment. If you are not familiar with repairing anything electronic, then I would recommend checking out some of the free information on the internet. There are plenty of websites that have tutorials and more on learning basic electronics. Check out the many good Books On Basic Electronics at amazon. I would check out the communication and electronics to get an understanding of how ham radios and other radios function. The best approach is to start out learning basic electronics and work your way up. I did that sort of thing years ago when I was in CB Radio and learned what I could from books. Then I ended up going to college for Electrical Engineering with the master in Electronics. It was a long journey, but well worth it. I worked as an Electronic Technician for about 11 years and then in 1996 started working as a Computer Repair Technician. I have been doing that ever since.

Tools For Building Ham Radio Antennas

If you are going to design and build your own Ham Radio Antennas you will need some different tools. You will need the typical tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, hacksaw and the other common tools you will find in an everyday toolbox. If you are going to build Ham Radio Antennas out of PVC Pipe or Electrical PVC Conduit Pipe you will need a PVC Pipe Cutter. You can easily find them at Lowes, Home Depot and Harbor Freight. They can easily cost anywhere from $10 to $200 depending on the pvc pipe cutter. For what you will be using it for I would not spend a lot.

Homebrew 6 Meter Cubical Quad Antenna

Just An Example Of A Cubical Quad Antenna
I am starting to build a 6 Meter Quad Antenna. I have chosen this mainly because it will fit my area comfortably. The first thing to do is check the internet for as much information as possible. Youtube has a variety of videos out there to get ideas for building the antenna. There are also many sites with excellent pics to get various ideas as to the construction of the antenna. I also tend to write different ideas down on graph paper for future reference.

Once I had a plan in mind I decided as to where I would get materials from. There are places out there that sell fiberglass tubes of varying sizes to make the spreader arms. Some of the places I would suggest are dx engineering and max gain systems. I decided in my case due to a lack of funds I would go with grey electrical pvc conduit pipe. It will not be very heavy due to the small size of the antenna. It would work well for other antennas such as 2 meters. The grey pvc conduit pipe is also uv resistant. The pvc conduit is always available at Lowes and Home Depot.
In trying to make the antenna as light as possible I am extending fiberglass driveway markers out of the 1.5ft pieces of pvc conduit pipe. These are also available from Lowes and Home Depot and are not very expensive. The also have some flexibility which will help in case of wind. I have seen some different techniques for stringing the antenna around the quad ends of the spreaders. What I will try using are two small hose clamps and a piece of the black outer part of some coax cable. Inside the pvc conduit I am going to place a 1 foot piece of dowel rod and mount the fiberglass driveway marker into it. This would also provide some adjustment for the spreaders if needed. If you are thinking of a ham antenna project check out this link http://www.ve3sqb.com/ .

Homebrew And New Moxon Antennas

Moxon Antenne 20m
20 Meter Moxon Antenna On Top
Looking around the internet at different types of Ham Radio Antennas to build I came across the Moxon Antenna. It is basically a wire type antenna made to act like a two element ham antenna. It is a directional type beam antenna. It can be made light enough to be used with a light duty antenna rotor. There are various places on the internet where you can buy a fairly low cost antenna rotor. Sometimes you can just use a heavy duty tv antenna rotor.

Excellent Buys At Amazon and Ebay On Ham Radio Equipment

Well I think the title of the post says it all. Yes there are lots of good deals on Ham Radio Equipment at Ebay and Amazon. There are plenty of used items in good condition at Ebay. There are various vintage ham radio transceivers that made need some kind of repair. So if you are a service technician or just a ham radio operator there is always some kind of ham radio equipment to troubleshoot and repair. Just make sure to check out the reviews on the seller to determine if it is a good idea to purchase the item. Yes I would certainly check out the used Ham Radio Equipment on Ebay.
Usually at Amazon the Ham Radio Equipment is new, so the prices may be higher than used on Ebay. If you can afford a new Ham Radio for example I would go for it. If you are setting up a service center or are just working on your own Ham Radios be sure to look for some good repair equipment. There are plenty of good Digital Volt Meters, Oscilloscopes as well as other excellent Electronic Repair Equipment. Once again you have the choice of buying new test equipment or buying used test equipment. If you are just starting out you may look into the used category . This way you can save yourself some money and still get a good Ham Radio Equipment.
I have found that most Ham Radio Operators keep their ham equipment in good shape. I guess you could say that we are very proud of our ham radio hobby. Besides you never know when there may be an emergency and we are right there at the front lines ready to help. That brings me to the point of making sure that you have a good base ham transceiver as well a good mobile ham transceiver. I suggest to look for a mobile ham radio that covers hf, vhf and uhf  and this way you are limited to certain ham bands. Just make sure you have the proper Ham Radio License to transmit on them. I would also make sure you have a good Ham Radio Amplifier and a good Ham Radio Antenna system that will handle the power. This way when your needed your ready. Also if you have an emergency of your own you can get the help needed.
So remember to search on Ebay For New And Used Ham Radio Equipment. Also don't forget to search on Amazon To Find That New Ham Radio Equipment you may want for Christmas. Once again you may find some used ham radio equipment on amazon as well. Also check out all the Ham Radio Dealers on the internet such as Ham Radio Outlet, MFJ, DX Engineering, AES Electronics and Universal Radio. There are many other Ham Radio Dealers out there on the internet, but these are my favorites.

Antenna Simulators

If you are going to build your own Ham Radio Antennas I would learn about the various Ham Radio Simulators. There are various Ham Radio Simulators that you can download off the internet. Some of them are demo programs, but provide enough to build or design a nice antenna. Here is a link to a website where you can download one of the Antenna Simulators http://www.qsl.net/4nec2/ . This is another excellent website for antenna design http://www.ve3sqb.com/ .Check out the video below about the 4nec2 antenna simulator.

What Ham Radio Is About

                                                                HAM RADIO
Ham Radio is one of those hobbies that have so many directions to go in it may be difficult to choose. There are those that are happy just listening to the various bands and frequencies. For me that happens quite a bit, because I am working on the computer most of the time. Yes I am most likely working on one of my many blogs. I just happen to find it enjoyable by trying to find out just how far away I may be able to hear someone. Maybe one of these days when it's quiet in the house I may get in there and do some talking. I am really not interested too much in being a dx contester. I am not saying there is anything wrong with it, it's just not what I do.
